Cops
Cops is the common term used to reference men and women who belong to state, city, town and municipal police departments throughout the country. Although there is now a popular television show of the same name, many still do not understand the trials and tribulations as well as the significant roles cops play in society.
The first and most significant duty that cops undertake is to protect citizens from the criminal element in their immediate area. In cities, often cops are faced with multiple kinds of adverse and criminal behavior. Many parked cars are broken into twenty-four hours a day in a city, and cops must respond to each. Cops must, however, also contend with perpetrators who mug tourists and commuters for money and other valuables. There is also widespread prostitution and illegal drug trafficking in cities. Cops must be trained to deal with each of these scenarios, all while maintaining a good, strong relationship and reputation with the community.
Cops in rural and suburban areas are often faced with different kinds of tasks and responsibilities than their urban counterparts. In rural areas, cops are often called into situations regarding land disputes and like their urban partners, domestic squabbles. In terms of drugs in rural areas, they are not sold out in the open on the streets, therefore, often cops use helicopters with sensors, as well as information from neighbors and townspeople in order to detect rural homes where drugs may be processed, distributed, or grown.
The overarching role that all cops must play however is servant to the community. Cops protect and serve our towns and cities and seek to develop long lasting, friendly, constructive relationships with citizens. Cops take part in fundraisers, toy drives during the holidays, and also provide security for public concerts, local football games, and other social events. Cops are more than just crime fighters; they are an indispensable part of our daily lives.
